With brainstorm robotics, there are many people that have created some amazing project over the past few years. Lego has released the Mindstorms NXT product since 2006, and the technology has only improved along with the possibilities when the second version was released three years later. Aside from the regular mechanical builds and construction style assembly toys children had been making for the past decade, many eager students and robotics fans have been showing off their projects to the world. There are many videos available online that show what is possible with the Lego inventions, but there are a few that really stick out and have drawn tremendous hits. In other words, they have gone viral.
The Lego segway robot is one example of an ingenious project that has been inspired by portable and highly mobile transport system invented by Dean Kamen. With a keen array of strategically placed sensors, this project designed with Lego Mechatronics can balance itself and drive around without any human control. Some of these sensors include a gyroscope and accelerometer to provide the Lego Intelligent Brick with valuable sensory input to drive motorized wheels to keep the robot balanced in one axis. This robot simulates an inverted pendulum where a beam is free to rotate about the single axis of the wheels, and the wheels are driven in the corresponding directions to oppose shifting of the robot's center of gravity.
A card dealing robot was also built using ROBOTC programming for Lego, but upon review, this build did not seem all that difficult. This would be a great project for someone who is just past the beginners phase and is looking for something more challenging and more practical. The robot deals two cards, as in when playing a game of poker, to each player. That is really the extent of what this robot does, and thus the project is seemingly not too difficult from an advanced robotics expert's perspective. However, it does offer some practicality and demonstrates how the Intelligent Brick can be combined with the NXT sensors and motors to produce something useful.
One of the more intricate designs of graphical programming for Lego is that of the robotic artist. In one video, one of the Lego robots draws a very accurate and distinct replica of the Mona Lisa. This type of construction of the mechanical design does not seem terribly complex; however, the level of programming involved certainly requires a great level of experience. This type of project would also require a lot of time and effort because of the level of advanced mathematics that are necessary for creating an NXT program such as this. These types of NXT programs definitely provide the world of science and technology something outstanding that other can build upon.
When users become more confident and experienced with Lego Imagination, there are a plethora of projects that can be undertaken. The wealth of resources and information that exists in books and on the web is immense, and it certainly provides users with plenty of support. The Lego website will have plenty of tutorials and project instructions, and there will be directions for basic projects that come in the kit. This support does not only come from Lego directly, but there are a huge variety of websites and videos that provide tons of NXT Robots tutorials and information.
